Universal Design for Learning

In 2007, Campbell Ridge Elementary School (CRES) was awarded one of six Universal Design for Learning (UDL) grants, and in 2008, CRES was awarded one of three UDL grants. The grants are designed to help all students gain the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning through rich supports. The funds were used to purchase equipment and train teachers in strategies that will help reduce barriers to the curriculum by integrating hands-on learning and technology-based instruction to help maintain high achievement standards for all learners.

At Campbell Ridge, we have used the grant funds to build Universal Design for Learning Model Classrooms.

The rooms have:

  • Interwrite boards that enable students to touch and manipulate documents and web pages online in the Kdg-grade 3 classrooms,
  • Interwrite pads that enable students to touch and manipulate documents and web pages online in the 4th and 5th grade classrooms,
  • a sensory table where students can practice writing letters, words and numbers in tactile mediums such as sand, rice and beans,
  • talking calculators,
  • interactive online books,
  • a digital projector so students can view instructional materials in color as they are being developed,
  • a camera to capture moments of active learning that students can use to reflect and build writing skills.
