Results wil not be back until the fall of 2013.  You will receive information in the fall about how your child performed in May.  We thank our students, our parents and our staff for working incredibly hard this year and we are excited to see how everyone shines!

Pennies for Patients Service Learning Project

Over the last three weeks, Reiley Elementary students have been digging deep to raise "Pennies for Patients," a fundraiser program for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Students collected change at home in personal banks that they cashed in each week.  They also completed several additional challenges.  The first week students participated in a “Make Leukemia and Lymphoma Disappear” activity where students paid for large sticky paper to cover up large Leukemia and Lymphoma signs.  The second week students deposited money into jars to see teachers complete various challenges.  All the jar challenges were met!  We had teachers dress up in various costumes, Mrs. Boggs cut her hair to donate it for cancer wigs, Ms. Groeschen let students make her a human sundae, Mrs. Rath let every student duct-tape her to the wall during lunch.  On Friday evening spring break got started with Mr. Tucker spending the evening on the roof of the school.

The second grade teachers headed up this service learning   project, which included many opportunities to teach with lessons for the students and for public service announcements about Leukemia and Lymphoma.  The school goal was set at $500.00.  At the end of the three weeks the grand total raised was $5,151.14!!!!  This amount included an anonymous donation of $1,000.  We can’t be any prouder of the students’ efforts and understanding that they can make a difference in our world.  Go Roadrunners!

PTA Brings The Arts to Reiley

The wonderful Reiley PTA brought the ballet to students this week!  All grade levels were treated to performance and instruction about ballet on Monday, January 14th.  Grades K-2 attended a 50 minute performance followed by a repeat performance for students in grades 3-5.  Students were introduced to basic ballet concepts and they were also allowed time to ask questions of the professional dancers.  Because the PTA had raised enough money through their early fundraising, they were able to bring in this wonderful arts program at no cost to the students or to the school.  We are so appreciative of all the work that our PTA does for each and every student and staff member at Reiley.  Thank you for bringing wonderful events to students and staff and for encouraging the love of the arts for all!

Shall We Dance?

Third grade students performed their rendition of The Nutcracker ballet in December before a packed audience in the Reiley gym.  Students in the classes of Ms. Jones, Ms. Trowbridge and Ms. Humphreys practiced their various dances at recess and before school in order for them to be prepared to perform.  Students learned not only about the elements of dance, but also learned drama vocabulary.  Pictured to the left are two couples dancing a Spanish dance.  A special recognition to Ms. Kelly Jones who has performed the ballet with her students and/or grade level students for well over 25 years.  She began the tradition when she taught at Alexandria Elementary.  Many of the elements of this student performance has been developed and originated with Ms. Jones.  Over the years, Ms. Jones has purchased all the beautiful costumes for each dancer, as well as all the props. This year, Ms. Jones' assistant for the ballet was a former student who is now in college.  She routinely has students come back to watch the performance and to let her know what an impact it had on their education. Congratulations to Ms. Jones for her continued commitment to her students and encouraging the love of the arts for children!
